Veropedia: Is It a Better Wikipedia, or a Worse Wikipedia?

Posted by grizzlymedia on December 21, 2007

The Wikipedia people have come up with a new online encyclopedia called Veropedia which they believe is a significant upgrade from Wikipedia. Only Wikipedia contributors who have proven themselves as providers of quality content are allowed to submit to Veropedia. The articles must meet stricter criteria and will be verified by experts and academics. There are some disadvantages: there is still advertising, most of the articles are quite brief, and coverage of many topics is not yet available. Veropedia has a long way to go, but at least it appears to be a step in the right direction.

Whatever Happened to Humans?

Posted by grizzlymedia on December 21, 2007

Have you ever been frustrated when you dialed a company’s 800 number only to spend what seemed like the rest of your life in endless voice mail purgatory? Well do I have a solution for you! Now there is GetHuman, a website that provides you with the inside scoop on a “direct to human” number that gets you immediately to a real, live human being rather than an endless nightmare of “press 7 for this, press 5 for that, press 4 for something else, press 2 so your phone will explode and you will be out of your misery.” And what’s up with the ones that say, “If you are dialing from a rotary phone, please stay on the line and an operator will assist you?” Exactly who is dialing from a rotary phone these days? Where do they think you’re calling from, 1967? But I digress with my tirade against the evils of voice mail madness. Just bookmark GetHuman and give it a try the next time you have to call your favorite (or most hated!) company!

Sure You Know MySpace, But What About TeenSpace?

Posted by grizzlymedia on December 12, 2007

The Internet Public Library has a cool new “branch” called TeenSpace, and it’s made just for you. What does IPL TeenSpace have to offer? For starters, it has great Research and Writing Tips to help you write your research paper. It also has a Poetry Wiki if you’re into writing poetry, or maybe just because you like poetry, so be sure to tell your friends in the Live Poets Society. For all you Blatant Bibliophiles, there’s a Graphic Novels Guide. There are even FAEQs. You’re probably thinking I’m a bad typist and I actually mean FAQs, or frequently asked questions, which most websites have. No way, dude. IPL TeenSpace has FAEQs, frequently asked embarrassing questions, things teens need to know, answered by doctors, psychologists, dropout prevention experts, Planned Parenthood, and yes, even piercing experts! Yes, I said piercing experts from the Association of Professional Piercers. If you’re going to defile your body, at least do it safely, people! And did I mention the Homework Help?  Whatever you do, just don’t go to the Procrastinator link because it has cool, fun stuff that will distract you from doing your school work and your teachers will come in and try to hurt me for telling you about this website. In addition to their major links, the site has directories for clubs and organizations; health and sexuality; money and work; technology; reading and writing; school and homework help; sports, entertainment, and the arts. Sadly, the IPL’s Ask a Question Reference Service will be closed for the holidays from December 17, 2007 through January 7, 2008, but other features of TeenSpace will be available during the break.
